Vintage used to mean any item over 25 years old but, in this case, we mean that you can rummage through your closet and recycle some of your forgotten style gems. You will positively be “on trend” with the same dress you wore last year AS LONG as you have added an updated twist to it. As with most things, looking good and feeling fantastic requires time, effort and planning more than flashing the credit card (very 2007!).
“Determine that the thing shall be done, and then we shall find the way” Abraham Lincoln
Have a definite plan. How do you want to look? What do you feel most comfortable in? What have you got that you don’t wear enough? How do you want to feel? Once you have an idea, don’t talk yourself out of it because you think you are too old, too overweight, too unconfident etc etc. Don’t conform to other people’s expectations of how you must look. Pull out ideas from newspapers and magazines for inspiration.
“A girl should be two things – classy and fabulous” Coco Chanel
Always take the opportunity to dress up. It is better to be over dressed than the other way round. Never apologize for how you look. Make the most of your “best bits” but in a “classy” way. If you are lucky enough to have a choice, select just one focal point to show case.
“It’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny” Coco Chanel
I’ve said this many times before, but really do allocate any available time and/or budget on hair, make-up and nails. Neglecting these will dim the fabulousness of that “show stopper” gown. Make-up should enhance, not mask, your natural beauty. An uneven skin tone will detract from eyes and lips.
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Never give it” Eleanor Roosevelt
Ensure that there is nothing about your look that makes you feel unconfident i.e. missing buttons, shoddy hemline, gaping armholes. Always put your best foot forward and pay attention to even the smallest of details. Likewise, accept all compliments and don’t point out any short comings.
“Zest is the secret of all beauty. There is no beauty that is attractive without zest” Christian Dior
Stand tall, shoulders back, tummy in and switch off any negative thoughts. A great way to add “zest” is to have a sneaky dance around your bedroom before you go out. It is guaranteed to take your mind off any body image concerns. It may sound crazy but, believe me dance is very, very powerful.
….and finally, a woman’s best weapon is always red lipstick. It has been used to signal post-war freedom as well as a “pick me up” in times of economic downturn. It shows glamour and confidence synonymous with Hollywood sirens from the 40’s and 50’s. Use to add drama to even the plainest of outfits or to do that “day to night” transition. Everyone has their own “red” so find out which one works best for you ….I dare you!
