Dress my age….never!

How to avoid the “mutton/frump” factor!
I may be closer in age to Susan Boyle than Cheryl Cole, but I don’t intend to look like EITHER. Now is the time for me to recognize that my greatest asset is CONFIDENCE. You know, the kind of “I don’t give a damn” confidence that you only get from experience. I could get completely weighed down by the annoying and distinctly unglamorous changes that are happening to me in my mid-forties…..but I don’t want to spoil the surprise for those of you who aren’t there yet. No, I’m going to define and embrace my own, unique Katherine B sense of style.
Here are my Top Tips for how you too can Be your best ever self, whatever your age:
- Never wear anything that an older lady would wear. This applies whether you are 16 or 60 – dress according to your shape, lifestyle and confidence levels
- Never wear anything that your daughter would wear either….enough said!
- Don’t conform to latest trends. Certainly never wear a complete “head to toe” fashion look. It shows a distinct lack of imagination. Stunning classic pieces can be adapted and brought right up to date with amazing footwear and accessories.
- Less is more. Apply this to hair colour, make up and the amount of flesh on display.
- Keep your make up current. We can easily fall in to the trap of doing the same thing, in the same way over and over. Make up is a great, inexpensive way to ring the changes. We can all take many different colour combinations so be bold and experiment.
- Accept when it’s time to give in to the grey (hair that is). If you have more than 60% grey then switch from costly colouring to glossing and conditioning treatments. A sharp, sassy cut will ensure that you still look hot. There is nothing more aging than harsh, over-straightened hair – soften and lighten as appropriate.
- Invest in good quality accessories – footwear, coats and jackets, jewellery and bags should all be the best that you can afford. Justify the expense by dispensing with those “cheap and cheerful” spur of the moment purchases.
- Apply the “Rule of 3” – before buying, ask yourself: can it be worn to 3 different types of occasion, with 3 other items that you already own and for 3 consecutive years without looking dated. This should help eliminate those costly mistakes and make way for more investment purchases that you LOVE and wear FOREVER.
- Ditch the black and embrace colour. Nothing screams “confidence” as much as bold use of colour. Different tones of the same colour look elegant and unique as do 3 colours worn together. It will, quite literally, add another dimension to a bland two colour affair.
If you need a little inspiration then look to style icons who have “aged with attitude” such as Dame Helen Mirren and Joanna Lumley (60’s), Kim Catrell (50’s), Yasmin Le-Bon and Courtney Cox (40’s).
Why not inspire others and develop your own iconic look?
Make the most of this FABULOUS age that you are NOW …you will be glad you did.
