M - Me-time

Article by
Rachel Willis

There’s a reason why aeroplane emergency procedures tell you to fit your own oxygen mask before attending to the needs of others.

If you are incapacitated then you are of little use to anyone else.

The same applies with your own energies in everyday life. If you are overtired, overwhelmed and running on empty, what do you have to give to others?

Therefore, far from being selfish, it is actually your responsibility to schedule ‘me-time’ into your life. And before I hear any words of protest, yes, this is especially important when your diary is filled to the brim!

In response to anyone who questions your right to this time, I would suggest you repeat the above analogy since they are obviously running on empty, else they wouldn’t have any reason to debate your choice.

Preferably, this ‘me-time’ is to be taken on a daily basis, but the requisite is at least two hours a week.

Some people book a massage, some go for long walks through the countryside and others simply take a power nap. What you do in this time is entirely up to you – as befits the nature of ‘me-time’ – provided you are unwavering in your commitment.
