“Style Tribes” part 2…..looking good in Autumn 09

Q. What does ‘Bat out of hell’ (Meatloaf) and ‘I wanna know what love is’ (Foreigner) remind you of?

A. The 80’s!!

These were the songs I heard whilst checking out the new season’s collections in an edgy, high fashion store. A subtle pointer to the fact that Autumn 09 has put us FIRMLY back into this decade – complete with shoulder pads, pull-on jersey miniskirts and perms.

Personally, I love it. Enough of the floaty, ethereal boho and in with the asymmetric power dressing. If done well, it can be striking, sharp and extremely flattering.

Here are my 5 key pieces that every woman should embrace this season:

  1. A fabulous coat. Grab yours NOW whilst you can. There has never been a better selection in my opinion and every high street store has their own little gem.
  2. A leather jacket. Expense is no longer an excuse – H&M do a great version for £35.00. Just ensure that it is fitted, neat and worn with everything from work wear to pretty dresses.
  3. A Chanel inspired jacket. Zara have the most amazing selection and have managed to lose the “Miss Marple” effect. They are best worn with fitted dark denim jeans. Ideal for those of us who need “business casual” looks. Pearls are optional but, if worn, must be bold.
  4. An accessory that has either studs or zips on it. Show that you get that “rock chick” is a hot trend but you’ll do it your way. Bags, belts, bangles and shoes can all go a little “punk” this season.
  5. Berries. No, not just part of your “5 a day”, but this season’s divine new shade. Combine with your usual black and white combo to update and rejuvenate. Apply to footwear, handbags, lips and nails.

So what does it mean for each of the “Style Tribes” (Be Fabulous – May 09)

Here’s how to remain authentic AND on- trend:

Drama Queen

you will LOVE the fierce tailoring, not to mention jewelled wrist cuffs, eye popping shoulder pads and still plenty of monochrome.

Creative Genius

the “folklore” look is perfect for you – Monsoon does this so, so well.

Romantic Goddess

hoorah perms are back! But this time they are longer, looser and generally more goddess like. You may like to add sparkle to your look – sequins are a hot new trend.

Natural Beauty

you can wrap yourself up in chunky knitwear. So much choice out there. Simply add leggings and knee high boots.

Classic Chic

at last suits are back. This time they are more structured and closer fitting – guaranteed to give the illusion of at least one dress size smaller. Court shoes and patterned tights complete this look.

Gorgeous Glamour

Dresses are your passion and dresses are everywhere. Body conscious wool shift dresses will take you from day to evening – just add ruby red lips and sky-scraper stilettos.

Rock Chick

leather jackets, leather dresses, even leather trousers are all out there for you this season, not to mention studs, zips and punk inspired t shirts.
