Summer Style Rules - or how to pack!

“…fun and sunshine….enough for everyone”(Club Tropicana – Wham!)
Wherever your “Club Tropicana” may be this summer, here are some tried and tested “summer style rules” to help make your packing a little easier:
- Don’t sabotage – if, like me, you look a little less than fabulous on the beach, then give yourself a helping hand. Ditch those unforgiving shorts, unflattering tankini and shapeless fleece.
- Don’t create a micro-wardrobe of “that will do on holiday” items. These tend to be Monsoon tribal print dresses circa 1989 – they may be a reminder of happy times past – but please leave them firmly in the past.
- Cull the footwear – flip flops/jeweled sandals, wedges/ dressier option plus walking shoes are all you need.
- Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise – bangles, over-sized sunglasses, eye catching bag or statement necklace will all detract from a less-than perfect “beach body” (believe me – I know).
- Plan in a professional manicure and pedicure – not only will it look sensational but it should last the whole week.
- Protect your hair as well as your skin – invest in protection spray, leave-in conditioner and, of course, a hat. (A Panama will always raise your “style credentials”).
- Ditch the foundation – it tends to misbehave in the heat. Replace with a tinted moisturiser with a built in, chemical free, sunscreen.
- Don’t be tempted to sneak in those “just in case” items – they will only weigh down your suitcase and confuse the issue of what to wear.
- Don’t leave home without your pashmina – it will keep you warm and smug on the journey (not to mention the chilly evenings), provide protection from the elements whilst on the beach, and make any outfit instantly “dressed up” for the evening.
- Give yourself credit – take a long hard look around you at the other “real women” on the beach. Now identify all of YOUR good bits that you are grateful for. No one is perfect so don’t waste your time trying.
And if you’re still struggling here is my top list of essentials to get you started:
- 2 pairs of trousers including one pair of jeans
- 2 pairs of shorts OR 1 summer skirt and 1 pair of Capri pants
- 1 dress
- 2 kaftan-type tops to wear over shorts or swimwear PLUS to wear with trousers in the evening
- Selection of plain t-shirts/vest tops in variety of colours
- 2 or 3 dressier tops
- 1 cardigan + pashmina
- Footwear as above
Oh, and the most important one of all…
Time to “Be yourself”, relax and have fun!
