I describe the Grey Zone as that place where many people spend their entire lives. – it’s not awful and it’s certainly not brilliant.
It’s that uncomfortable comfortable place where people are prepared to sell out on their dreams for a comfortable existence. What a waste of a life. Over the years of coaching and training many people, I realise that most of the population settles for second best because they haven’t got the courage to do anything about changing their situation.
Fear keeps us in the Grey Zone because we do not believe that we have any choice but to remain where we are – spending years in a job we don’t really enjoy or a relationship that doesn’t fulfil us. We are scared of moving into the unknown, of doing something different. Fear comes from our limiting beliefs that we have about ourselves and our abilities. In fact, the consequences of us making a change are often built up in our minds to mean something far worse than the actual reality of the situation.
Our minds are brilliant at creating pictures, sounds, feelings in our heads and then that’s what we focus on as our reality. Soon we forget that it’s not true. We want to do something different but that nagging voice in our heads says ‘who do you think you are?’ Have you ever had a situation at work which worried you for weeks in advance of the event and in the end it worked out fine? Maybe you’ve even sabotaged your potential success because you decided in advance of the event that you were going to make a mess of it.
It’s normally one of two things. Either you have a goal that is so compelling you will take the risk of going for it. Or the pain of doing nothing becomes so big that you are finally tipped over the edge.
I have a question for you – What would you change if you knew that you couldn’t fail?
Now ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen if you pursue that goal? What will you gain or lose if you really go for it?
Often, when I ask my clients these questions they realise that the worst thing that could happen is not that scary after all – it can be managed. When I set up The Change Corporation two years ago I asked myself those same questions. I realised that the worst thing that could happen was that I might need to go out and get a proper job again one day. I knew I could achieve that relatively easily and so decided to go for it.
You see the thing is that when you face your fears head on and take 100% personal responsibility for what you want to achieve you will move out of the Grey Zone towards your goal.
Good Luck!
