Just A Modern Girl…

Newly published author Bethanie Lunn has put together a must-have lifestyle bible for the woman on the go, who likes to be in the know. Faith Brotherston finds out more.

Bethanie Lunn is feeling fabulous. Her bulging contact book of top hidden haunts, celebrity advice and wealth of experience in the beauty field has finally manifested itself in the form of her first book, and she couldn’t be more excited.

Largely because to be a published author is an ambition she’s held since she wrote her first book, The Green Cat, at the age of seven. Her teacher, impressed, presented her with a bound copy, and the desire to be a grown up writer was born.

After landing a role as beauty editor on a Midlands glossy magazine, Bethanie used her contacts and knowledge to launch a successful PR company in London before meeting her husband and relocating to Leeds, Bethanie began to listen to the voice in her head that kept telling her she ought to follow her dream, and the very real voices of her friends, who thought the book was a best-seller in the making. And they were right, as earlier this month, “her book”:The Modern Girl’s Guide to Fabulousness was published.

It is, Bethanie says, a must have little black book for women, full of gems and secrets for every glamorous girl and would be fashionista wanting to stay one step ahead of the pack with a perpetual finger on the pulse.

“The idea was first triggered during the recession,” she says. “Obviously it had an effect on every area of our lives and beauty and glamour was one aspect that people felt compelled to cut back on – luxuries had to be the first to go. But that made us all miserable!

“I started to trawl the country for great little spots; excellent services, places and products that I road tested and gave honest feedback on, and began to record my finds to share with others. I’m a massive advocate of independent, small businesses; many of which have suffered during the downturn in the economic climate, and those that I’ve fallen in love with, I’ve included and invited others to experience.

“One of the biggest gripes I heard when I was researching the book was that people were fed up of everything being so London-centric. I’ve travelled the country to source material, so that there is something for everyone.

“I like to think that it’s a lifestyle bible – an independent, honest guide. To get the Fabulous mark of approval, something really has to make the grade. I was constantly getting suggestions and stumbling across fantastic finds, and everything that I felt was outstanding, the last word in fabulousness, is included in the book. It’s the perfect thing to slip into your bag to read on the train or flick through for inspiration – it might just lead you to your new favourite place.”

You might think that’s easy for her to say, but Elle Macpherson is a huge fan of Bethanie’s work (and who are we to argue with her?) Elle says The Modern Girl’s guide to Fabulousness “separates the so-so from the sensational, providing the fastest guide to ‘intelligent spending’. Bethanie’s ‘little black book’ uncovers places and services in addition to featuring experts who offer their pearls of wisdom . . . Let’s hope Bethanie Lunn takes her gentle wit and her quest for fabulousness global.”

It is all one exciting rollercoaster for Bethanie right now – she’s also been appointed by fashion ecommerce specialists very.co.uk to be their online presenter, stylist and blogger, a role she’s embraced with gusto.

“I’m loving it – Very is a new concept and proving really successful because of its celebrity status, product range and pricing. I’m thrilled to be part of it.”

Understandably delighted at the way her love for glamour has manifested itself as a full time career, Bethanie is on cloud nine, but she does come down long enough to consider what she’ll do next. One ambition, she says, is to take Fabulousness global:

“I like the idea of bringing out a Modern Girl’s Guide To Fabulousness in different countries, sharing the best kept secrets and hidden gems in the world to help women everywhere get the best products and services, wherever they are.

“Or,” she muses, “I could expand the range… branch out and write a series of Modern Girl’s Guides to encompass a number of different life scenarios and how to deal with it. I think the demand is there and the reaction to this has been overwhelming. I haven’t put a huge amount of thought into what next, the present is quite exciting enough right now,” she adds.

Bethanie’s” book”:The Modern Girl’s Guide to Fabulousness is out now, priced at £9.99. For insider info and news, follow Bethanie on Twitter: @BethanieLunn
