“Down to Earth” Beauty

Article by
Jodie Fuller

Is it me or is beauty sometimes boring?

I have been doing this (beauty stuff) for years now, told to cleanse, tone and moisturise from about the age of 13 years old! “Look after your skin Jodie, you only get one!” another one was “If you can eat it, it can go on your skin” My Nan used to tell me.

Now I am getting a bit bored with the endless amount of CHOICE on the shelves, what to buy, what for, where do I put it and when? I have started to go back in my thoughts and wonder, what did the goddesses and princesses used to use before there was “Avon, Olay and La Prairie”?

Going back to what my dear old Nan used to say and do, I remember her using very natural things on her skin, like olive oil and honey! Is this the way forward for me? Well sometimes, when I feel like it.

When you feel like having YOU TIME and can’t quite afford to go to the Spa retreat of your dreams, try a few things at home (get rid of husband and children first, no helpers please!)

I am a fan of “au naturel” and wanted to explore and share some tips with you (that will actually save you money too!).

Let’s start with the body! It’s very important to have a fresh healthy glow EVERYWHERE! Not only does it look nice (particularly on the beach) but YOU will feel nice too, and let’s face it, it’s all about YOU!

Basil & Lime Bath Salts

Run a bath, it all starts here! Relax and unwind (but prepare this next recipe 2 hours prior- well worth it!)

Ingredients:
5 cups of Sea Salt
1 Tsp. of Baking Powder
4 drops Basil Oil
5 drops Lime Scented Oil
2 Tsp. of Almond Oil

Mix the salt and the baking powder in a bowl. In another smaller bowl mix together all oils and add to salts, stir well. Leave to sit for 2 hours. Place them in jars with good airtight lids, if you don’t use it all at once. My tip would be to give a jar to a friend.

Grapefruit salt scrub

Grapefruit and pineapple go a long way in making your skin glow. Their fresh citrus scent is an instant “pick me up” too.

Salt scrubs are great for exfoliating and moisturizing at the same time. Try this recipe to make your own at home (it keeps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks).

Ingredients:
1/2 cup kosher salt
1 tbsp. grated fresh ginger
1 tbsp. grapefruit zest
1 cup almond or sesame oil

Stir all ingredients together and store in an air-tight container, keep it in the shower and use it weekly for a polished body read for the beach (or the pool at the gym works too!)

Eucalyptus infused salt scrub

Detox and revitalise with eucalyptus infused salt scrub. Eucalyptus acts like menthol to decongest and gets more oxygen to the brain (via inhalation), thus increasing your ENERGY!

Try this recipe three times a week if you can;

1 Cup of fine salt (sea salt is best)
5 Tsp of Olive oil
20 drops of Eucalyptus oil

Mix all together and apply to the whole body, starting at your feet and working upwards. This will increase your circulation.

Cucumber Facial cleanser

For very sensitive skins, try this cleanser for the face. I have battled to find a sensitive cleanser that doesn’t make my skin turn pink!

I blame it on the chemicals , so for a chemical free trial, try this one;

Ingredients:
1 small peeled cucumber
3 Tbsp beaten curds
1/2 cup yogurt

Grate cucumber into a bowl. Add yogurt and beaten curds and mix well. Apply paste over entire face and massage well.
Leave it on for 5 minutes and then rinse with cool water. This mixture will nourish skin, tighten pores and help reduce blemishes.

Oat facial Scrub

Sensitive skins should not avoid exfoliation; it still remains an important step in your routine. I have found a DIY exfoliator which is super easy.

Try this;

Ingredients:
1/2 Cup of uncooked oats (a handful will work too)

Make into a paste with some water, and then rub it on to your skin. Don’t rub too hard, the aim is to loosen dead skin cells. Then simply wash off. So easy!

Down to earth beauty

Down to earth beauty is about doing something that works for you. Something that makes you feel and look better. It’s about taking up a routine that’s easy – otherwise, let’s face it, you won’t do it!

Remember look rough and you’ll feel rough, look good and you’ll be steeped in a glow of self-confidence. Trust me it’s easier than you think.

Have a go at one or two recipes, maybe make them up in advance and let’s enjoy what nature has given us and show off what our mummy gave us!

It’s a great gift and a great reference book to have at home.
