They are all my style icons, but for different reasons. “Joan” because she has the same curvaceous figure as myself; Dita because she has the same colouring as myself and Sam Cam because she shares the same age and lifestyle (i.e. 40 something business woman with kids).
There is little point me adopting Kate Moss, Sienna Miller or Nicole Kidman as my icons – we have nothing in common. Hard as I may try, I will never be tall, blonde and willowy. Attempting their style will only lead to misery. So I wont even go there.
Well, you know those moments when you are facing a fitting room mirror and you just don’t know if you like what you see? The same moments when your logical self tells you that you SHOULD be feeling good but you just feel all wrong? And when, no matter how many people say that you look lovely…..you can’t wait to get home and take it all off?
These are all down to the fact that you are not being true to your inner icon. Once you have cracked the combination then shopping and dressing become a cinch.
Before I visit my clients for a style and wardrobe review I always ask them who their icons are. It follows that they physically resemble whoever they put down in some way. We usually come up with one or two more during the consultation. All they have to do in future is ask themselves: would their icon wear/buy it??? It works for the men too. Daniel Craig as James Bond is a popular one at the moment. It certainly helps to focus the mind – if the answer to the question is “no but Gordon Brown would” then best to leave well alone.
It’s not always easy to come up with icons I know. Try choosing words instead if easier. For example, I bought my lovely friend Jane a candle with the words “Dolly Rocker”. To me, they summed her up perfectly – blonde and girly but with a definite edge. From now on she ONLY buys items that fit with this. “That’s it” she exclaimed “that’s exactly who I am”. Maybe ask one of your trusted friends for inspiration.
By definition, “style icons” become our icons not because of what they wear but how they wear it. They possess an innate something that is theirs alone. Take Audrey Hepburn for example. If we dissect WHAT she wore it was really just plain, simple styles that suited her petite frame. It was more the WAY she wore them that we admire. Her inner sparkle if you will. My dear Aunty Nancy deserves a mention in this simply for wearing high heels and lipstick right up until she departed this mortal world at the age of 103. She certainly possessed that sparkle too and I hope that I will keep it alive in my own, unique way.
So, whether it’s Michelle Obama, Madonna or Lady Gaga, I urge you to uncover your own true iconic self. Who knows, you may become a 21st century Coco Channel…..
