Spring Time Eyes

Article by
Paola Recabarren

I think it’s safe to say the dark months are finally over and we can look forward to longer shiny days that lift up the soul! I can’t wait to see the blossom on trees, the daffodils on the roundabouts and the little wild flowers sprouting in the oddest places. I’m ready for colour, but not only in my surroundings, but in my makeup and clothes. Let’s put away the warm browns, greys, blacks, and blues…

Are you ready to brighten up your wardrobe and take a new look at the way you present yourself?

If you are reading this and have been put off by the thought of change in your make up routine, or you might even restrict yourself into thinking, ‘colour is for the young’, well put that nasty restriction back in the BIN where it came from!

I understand we are bombarded with images of lovely young things, on the billboards; the makeup counters, the magazines, all wearing ‘this seasons’ colours and none of them look past the age of 12…

But forget that, brush it to the side and give yourself the opportunity to open up to new ideas – whether you are 30 or past your 60’s allow me to introduce you to something you already know, but maybe never thought was applicable to you.

Be Fabulous founder, Karen D, asked me to write an article on spring make up colours; to be honest, I don’t see why we should have any rules in makeup, if it looks GOOD, then wear it. I’ve also compiled a list of “seasonal colours” from the top make up houses, so you can opt for the “Fasheeoon look” if that takes your fancy!
I would like to start with something really simple, something we can all do.

Somewhere along the line we manage to accumulate all this wonderful make up, which was either given to us, or we bought on a whim, or some sales lady decided it was the colour for ‘YOU’ and it all gets left behind gathering dust in a bathroom cabinet or rolling around at the bottom of a large dusty wicker baskets with all your lady things … yes you know what I mean, well lets dig all that out. You must amongst that lot have a few eye shadows that you either used up till only the edge is left or never even tried on.

What we are going to do today is a little bit of experimenting…don’t be scared!

Line the shadows up, get a small brush, the type you would use to apply eyeliner with (if you don’t have one, you can pop down to Superdrug and pick one up for £2.00), get two glasses and fill them with water.

Next, dip your brush in glass number one and starting with your first eye shadow, try to make a paste on one corner of the shadow. Test out on the back of your hand? If the colour is too wishy washy, keep going to make the paste thicker, once you have the right consistency, with strong colour, apply a very thin line as close to the eye lashes on the top of your eyes, and take a look in the mirror, only do one eye. DON’T assume that a colour will not suit you and avoid using it, try all the colours out, and with each one ask yourself these questions.

  • Does this colour make my eye look tired?
  • Does this colour sharpen up or even change my eye colour in a good way?
  • Does this colour surprisingly open up my eye?

Pinks tend to reflect the redness of an eye and even though you might not be tired, it sometimes picks up on that and makes you look even worse, but Pink can also be lovely on the right eye, so EXPERIMENT. I sound a bit like a self help book here, but only you can identify which colour looks good, and for this you have to get outside the box and try them out, Yellows! Greens! Oranges! Golds! Purples! Blues!

Okay you so might be thinking ‘yeah but I don’t suit green eye shadow’, blah blah blah … well as a professional make up artist for 14 years now I have noticed that colours tend to look different when you apply them in different ways. Personally I look ridiculous in blue eye shadow, I remind myself of a cranky 60’s housewife, but apply just a little as eyeliner, and I have to tell you the look is totally different, modern and elegant.

The amount of times I have done this on Ladies, I show them a colour, they kind of freak out (I have a little personal giggle!) and then they LOVE it once they see how amazing they look, small doses is sometimes the trick! Come on, we are clever enough to realise the logic in this, so go on, have a go…

Once you have chosen the colour that best suit you, do the other eye, finish off with lashings of mascara, do a little pose in the mirror, blow yourself a kiss and next time I’ll explain another procedure ‘the art of putting mascara on’…

For your information this season colours are Pinks, Golds and Mauves. Yummy!!

So, what was the other glass of water for? Well as you practice with each shadow, you will want to wash the brush after each one *wink
